Could a cross-river DLR extension finally unlock the full potential of Thamesmead?
In short: Transport for London is currently evaluating a major expansion of the Docklands Light Railway to connect Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to stimulate economic growth, support the construction of 25,000 new homes, and provide residents with faster, more sustainable connections to the heart of London.
The proposed DLR extension represents a significant effort to improve connectivity in east London. By creating a cross-river link from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead, the project intends to connect two key opportunity areas and four major development sites. Beyond the railway, planners are also considering a dedicated bus transit scheme running from Woolwich to Abbey Wood. These combined efforts aim to reduce car dependency and lower carbon emissions while creating up to 10,000 new jobs in the region.
Before construction can begin, extensive ground investigation works are scheduled between June and September 2026. These technical assessments are essential to ensure the project is safe and environmentally sound. Experts will drill 28 exploratory holes, some reaching depths of 60 meters—roughly the height of a 20-story building. The process involves complex geophysical testing, including borehole nuclear logging, which uses low-level radioactive sources similar to those found in medical imaging to analyze soil composition and stability.
The history of Thamesmead itself is a study in radical urban planning. Originally built on former marshland in the late 1960s, the area was designed with elevated walkways and first-floor living spaces to mitigate flood risks. However, the lived experience of residents often diverged from these architectural intentions, leading to the eventual demolition of some walkways and a shift toward more traditional building styles. Today, the area is undergoing a new phase of transformation, with major landowners and government bodies collaborating to secure the funding necessary to potentially start construction by 2028 and open to the public in the early 2030s.
