Could a single bacterium be the secret to preventing weight gain?

The Secret to Big Gains? Healthy Gut Bacteria #inmice | SciShow News · 6:08 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: While many fitness enthusiasts focus on protein shakes to build muscle, researchers are looking deeper into the digestive tract. A specific microbe has been found to significantly reduce weight gain and improve metabolic health in mice, potentially offering a new way to manage human obesity through the gut microbiome.

The gut microbiome, a complex ecosystem of bacteria and fungi, is intimately linked to human health and weight. While differences in these microbial communities are associated with obesity, identifying the specific drivers of weight gain has proven difficult because a single person's gut contains hundreds of different species. Previous research had identified a group of approximately 100 bacteria that collectively prevented weight gain in mice, but isolating a single key player was a laborious task.

Researchers at the University of Utah have now identified a specific rod-shaped bacterium called Turicibacter that can single-handedly reduce weight gain, blood sugar, and blood fat levels in mice consuming a high-fat diet. This discovery surprised scientists; Kendra Klag, Ph.D., the study's first author, noted that she initially expected a mix of three or four microbes to be required to achieve such dramatic effects. Instead, Turicibacter alone was sufficient to keep mice lean.

The mechanism behind this metabolic protection appears to involve the production of fatty molecules. When these purified fats from Turicibacter were added to a high-fat diet, they replicated the weight-controlling effects of the bacterium itself. Because people living with obesity tend to have lower levels of Turicibacter, this finding suggests the microbe may play a vital role in promoting healthy weight in humans. If these results translate, they could lead to novel weight management strategies by specifically adjusting the composition of the gut microbiome.

Studying these microbes is a significant technical challenge. Many gut bacteria are highly sensitive to oxygen and must be handled in airtight bubbles to survive, making the process of culturing individual species extremely difficult.
