Why can you unscramble an egg but never a pencil?

Why Time Only Goes One Way! This is THE reason · 13:49 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Physics laws allow for many things to happen in reverse, yet our world only moves forward. If energy is always conserved, why doesn't a fallen pencil spontaneously stand back up? The answer isn't a mystery of magic, but a matter of simple, overwhelming probability.

The laws of physics, such as the conservation of energy, do not inherently dictate a preferred direction for time. In a theoretical sense, if a ball rolls down a hill, the energy it gains as kinetic energy should be able to convert back into potential energy to return it to the top. However, in our reality, these processes are irreversible. We see this in everyday life: a pencil falling to a table or an egg being scrambled. While the total energy of the universe remains constant, the 'usefulness' of that energy changes.

The transition from order to disorder is driven by the conversion of useful energy into less useful forms. When a pencil stands on its tip, it possesses high potential energy—energy available to do work. Once it falls, that energy is transferred to the table and the air as heat and sound. While the energy still exists, it is now distributed among the vibrations of countless atoms. This shift from a high-energy state to a state where energy is spread out is what we perceive as entropy.

The reason this happens exclusively in one direction is rooted in probability. There is only one specific way to arrange the atoms of a pencil so that it stands perfectly on its tip. Conversely, there are an innumerably large number of ways to distribute the energy of a falling pencil among the trillions of atoms in the surrounding air and table. If we assume every possible distribution of energy is equally likely, the state with the most possibilities—disorder—will occur virtually all the time. The reverse simply has too few possibilities to ever happen by chance.
