In short: In Finland, only two dog breeds are legally permitted to be kennelled outdoors during the winter. One is the Finnish Lapphund, a hardy, medium-sized spitz with a genetic history that traces back to a rare post-domestication hybridization between a female wolf and a male dog.

The Finnish Lapphund's lineage is a biological marvel of northern Scandinavia. Genetic research into the mitochondrial DNA sub-clade d1 reveals that this breed, along with several other Sami-related dogs, originated from a female wolf and male dog hybridization occurring anywhere from 480 to 3,000 years ago. This maternal wolf sequence is so unique that it has not been matched anywhere else across Eurasia, sharing a phylogenetic root with the 33,000-year-old Altai dog.

Historically, these dogs served the indigenous Sami people as essential reindeer herders. Their physical traits were shaped by this demanding environment: a profuse, water-resistant double coat to withstand extreme cold, and a thick mane of hair around the head and neck in males. While the advent of snowmobiles in the mid-20th century shifted some preference toward the shorter-coated Lapponian Herder, the Finnish Lapphund remains a beloved companion, ranking as the sixth most popular companion animal in Finland as of 2014.

Despite their resilience, the breed faces modern genetic challenges. Progressive eye diseases like GPRA can cause blindness, and while the Finnish Lapphund Club of Great Britain implemented an ethical policy in 2006 to prevent the transmission of this autosomal recessive gene, breeders must remain vigilant. Interestingly, while 2.5% of Finnish dogs were affected by PRA in 2001, the incidence of certain eye issues like cataracts is much lower in the UK and USA.
