Why your body might already have a built-in system for pain relief
In short: Chronic pain is often treated with opioids that carry severe risks of lethality and organ damage. However, researchers are increasingly looking toward the body's own cannabinoid system. This natural pathway, which interacts with compounds found in cannabis, may offer a way to dampen pain signals without the heavy toll of traditional narcotics.
The human body possesses a natural cannabinoid system that plays a fundamental role in processing pain signals. This biological framework interacts with cannabinoids—the chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. Because this system is already involved in our natural pain pathways, researchers are exploring cannabinoids as a distinct treatment system rather than just a recreational substance. This science suggests that the body has an inherent mechanism for suppressing pain that can be modulated by specific compounds.
Clinical evidence supports the efficacy of cannabis in managing various chronic pain syndromes, particularly nerve-type pain. Nerve-type pain occurs when damage to a nerve causes signals to go out of control for more than three months. In controlled trials, subjects who smoked cannabis showed a greater than 30 to 40 percent reduction in pain compared to those given a placebo. Furthermore, basic studies using animal models have consistently shown that cannabinoids relieve pain across every model developed for the condition.
For many patients, the primary motivation for using cannabis is the desire to reduce reliance on more toxic treatments. While opioids derived from the opium poppy are mainstays in pain management, they can cause severe side effects including constipation, itching, and hypogonadism, with the risk of lethality at high doses. In some clinical observations, patients have been able to reduce or entirely eliminate other treatments by incorporating cannabis into their regimen. While the science is still developing, the combination of personal anecdotes and clinical data continues to drive a huge interest in the field of cannabinoid pain medicine.
