The only building in the world with a unique FIFA title
In short: Most stadiums are monuments to sport, but Estadio Centenario is a legal and historical anomaly. In 1983, it became the first—and remains the only—building on Earth officially designated by FIFA as a Historical Monument of World Football.
Located in Montevideo, Uruguay, the Estadio Centenario was constructed between 1929 and 1930 specifically to host the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup. Its name pays homage to the centenary of Uruguay's first Constitution. The construction was a feat of speed; immigrant workers completed the massive project in just nine months, despite heavy rains that forced several planned matches to be moved to other local venues like Pocitos Stadium.
The stadium served as the primary stage for the 1930 tournament, hosting ten matches including both semi-finals and the final. It has since become a fortress of Uruguayan football history. Even Brazil, one of the world's most dominant teams, has struggled here, managing only three wins in 20 attempts—including a notable 4–0 defeat in 2009.
The architecture is deeply intertwined with Uruguay's Olympic legacy. The 'Olympic Tribune' honors the nation's back-to-back gold medals in 1924 and 1928, while other grandstands are named after Colombes and Amsterdam, the specific cities where those victories occurred. Beyond the pitch, the site houses a primary school, a police station, and the Museum of Uruguayan Football, which opened in 1975 to preserve the nation's sporting achievements.
While it remains the national stadium, its role continues to evolve. Following a $6 million renovation in 2021 for the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana finals, it is poised for a historic return to the global stage. In 2030, the stadium is expected to host the opening match of the FIFA World Cup, marking exactly 100 years since the first tournament began.
