How to design a landscape that survives heavy pedestrian and pet traffic
In short: When neighborhood students trample your grass on their way to the bus stop, or dogs turn your yard into a restroom, standard landscaping fails. Transforming a high-traffic corner lot requires a strategic shift from delicate gardens to durable, resilient environments designed to withstand constant footfall and even snow plows.
Designing for high-traffic areas, such as a corner lot frequently used by pedestrians, requires prioritizing resilience over aesthetics alone. According to landscape contractor Jenn Nawada, plants in these zones must be able to survive heavy foot traffic, extreme heat, winter conditions, and even dog urine. Furthermore, safety is a critical design factor; when landscaping a corner street, plants should not be tall enough to obstruct the visibility of oncoming traffic.
The physical transformation begins with site preparation. After marking the area with spray paint, the existing grass should be removed using a sod cutter. Before any digging occurs, it is essential to contact the state's 811 service to check for gas, electrical, or other local utility lines. Once the soil is raked smooth with a metal rake, the heavy elements should be placed. Jenn Nawada recommends laying out heavy stepping stones—such as New England fieldstone—and decorative boulders before planting to prevent damage to new greenery.
Planting requires specific techniques to ensure long-term survival. Each hole should be dug to a width twice that of the plant's pot and to an equal depth. After gently removing the plant from its pot and teasing the root ball to loosen it, the plant should be placed in the hole with starter fertilizer. Finally, the hole is backfilled with soil, leaving space at the top for a layer of mulch to protect the area.
