In short: Neglected urban entryways often succumb to sidewalk weeds and decay. However, landscape designer Jenn Nawada demonstrates how to reclaim these small architectural spaces. By utilizing durable fiberglass planters, strategic soil mixtures, and low-voltage lighting, you can transform a cracked Brooklyn stoop into a beautiful, secure, and much more vibrant space.

Reviving a city stoop begins with the fundamental task of clearing the space. Landscape designer Jenn Nawambada suggests a thorough removal of all weeds growing through sidewalk cracks. For those seeking a DIY solution, weeds can be eradicated by hand or through a targeted spray composed of vinegar, salt, and dish soap.

Once the area is cleared, the introduction of durable fiberglass planters can provide immediate visual impact. The success of these containers relies on proper drainage and nutrient-rich soil. Nawada recommends starting with a base layer of crushed stone or marble chips at the bottom of the planters to prevent water stagnation. The planting medium should consist of a specific ratio: two bags of potting soil for every one bag of compost.

The selection of flora is critical for creating a layered, professional look. In a recent Brooklyn project, Nawada utilized kousa dogwoods as primary features, underplanting them with coleus to add texture and color. For the upper section of the stairs, a dwarf crape myrtle can be added in an additional planter to create depth.

Finally, the transformation is completed through the strategic use of light. Adding low-voltage landscape lighting under the trees serves a dual purpose: it enhances the dramatic aesthetic of the plants at night and provides essential security for the entryway. If external power is already available, these lighting elements can be easily plugged in to highlight the new greenery.
