How to refresh your yard without spending a single cent

How to Revitalize a Landscape for Free | Ask This Old House · 7:22 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Landscape designer Jenn Nawada demonstrates how to revitalize a yard by rearranging, dividing, and pruning existing plants. This video shows how to use basic tools to transform your outdoor space for free.

The process begins by removing dead plants with a shovel and filling the resulting gaps with suitable transplant candidates. For larger plants, it is important to tie branches together with twine and mark the plant's face to ensure it is replanted in the correct direction.

To fill smaller gaps, perennials can be divided by digging up a root ball and cutting it in half with a shovel to create two new plants. Once replanted, these specimens should be watered thoroughly and fertilized to aid nourishment.
