How to safely run electricity underground to a backyard shed
In short: Transforming a simple shed into a powered hangout requires more than just digging a hole. To do it safely and according to code, you must navigate specific depths, protective layering, and precise wiring connections to ensure your new outbuilding remains functional and safe.
To begin an underground electrical project, a licensed electrician should be consulted. The first essential step is to contact a utility locating service to mark any existing underground pipes or wires before any digging commences. Once the site is clear, a trench must be excavated from the house to the shed using a shovel or a trenching machine. To comply with electrical codes, the trench should be 18 inches deep, though site conditions may sometimes prevent reaching this depth.
Protection of the electrical conduit is vital. A layer of sand should be spread at the bottom of the trench to shield the 1 ½-inch PVC conduit from sharp rocks. After the conduit is laid, a second layer of sand and caution tape should be applied over the pipe to serve as a warning for future digging. If the trench cannot reach the required 18-inch depth due to terrain, the conduit must be covered with concrete to ensure safety.
The wiring process involves feeding 6-gauge UF wire through the conduit. This wire consists of four individual strands: two hots, a neutral, and a ground. At the shed, these wires connect to a sub panel, while at the main house panel, the hot wires connect to a new 60 Amp breaker. The neutral and ground wires must terminate in different spots within the subpanel. Once the main connections are secure, the power can be restored by turning the main breaker back on.
