In short: The Astros began their 63rd season with a dramatic shift in leadership and a record-breaking pitching performance. Despite a sluggish start that left them deep in the division standings, the team rallied to secure their fourth consecutive American League West title, marking a resilient turnaround in a challenging year.

The 2024 season marked a significant transition for the Houston Astros, beginning with the appointment of Joe Espada as the franchise's 25th manager. Espada succeeded Dusty Baker, who retired after leading the team to a World Series championship in 2022 and two American League pennants. The team also navigated a major change in broadcasting, becoming the first season to air games on the newly formed Space City Home Network, a joint venture with the NBA's Houston Rockets following the dissolution of AT&T SportsNet Southwest.

Early momentum arrived on April 1 when pitcher Ronel Blanco delivered the 17th no-hitter in team history against the Toronto Blue Jays. This feat was particularly notable as the earliest calendar-date no-hitter in Major League Baseball history and served as the first career managerial victory for Espada. Blanco’s dominance continued as he set an expansion-era record by recording 44 consecutive outs to start his season. Despite these highlights, the team struggled initially, falling to a 12–24 record in their first 36 games and trailing the division lead by 10 games as late as June 18.

The Astros eventually found their rhythm, reaching the .500 mark on June 26 following a seven-game winning streak. By September 13, the club celebrated its 5,000th franchise win, becoming only the second expansion team to reach that milestone. The team finished the regular season with an 88–73 record, clinching the AL West title for the seventh time in eight years. However, their postseason run ended abruptly in the American League Wild Card Series, where they were swept by the Detroit Tigers, concluding a historic streak of seven consecutive American League Championship Series appearances.
