How a community-driven remake turned a 1995 classic into a research tool
In short: OpenTTD began as a mission to rescue a beloved 1995 classic from outdated hardware limits. What started as a way to play Transport Tycoon Deluxe on modern systems has evolved into a sophisticated simulation capable of testing complex artificial intelligence and supply chain algorithms.
The project traces its origins to the desire to extend the capabilities of the original 1994 MS-DOS game, Transport Tycoon Deluxe. While earlier attempts like the 1996 FISH technology group conversion and the 1996–97 TTDPatch sought to modernize the experience, they remained restricted by the original's architecture. In 2003, Ludvig Strigeus began reverse-engineering the game into C, leading to the release of OpenTTD on March 6, 2004. This effort aimed to overcome the limitations of the original assembly language programming. The project eventually transitioned to using GitHub for its source repository and bug tracking in 2018.
Beyond simple preservation, OpenTTD has become a platform for significant technical expansion. The developers restructured the code to improve extensibility, eventually allowing for custom, user-made artificial intelligence (AI) and integrated download systems for customizations. While the game was originally a business simulation for transporting passengers and goods, its open-source nature has allowed it to transcend recreational play. The software is released under the GNU GPL-2-0-only licence and remains under active development. It even supports multiplayer sessions for up to 255 participants via the Internet or local networks.
Today, the game serves as a rigorous environment for academic research. Frameworks like OpenTTDLab allow researchers to use the game as a system for studying algorithms and their effects on supply chains. Because the game supports autonomous AI players written in the Squirrel programming language, it has become a premier tool for testing agents in dynamic, multi-agent strategic environments, such as the trAIns AI designed to manage complex railroad routes. This capability enables the study of diverse transport types, including the management of complex rail networks. Such research helps validate how different agents perform within highly competitive and cooperative environments.
