In short: Kamen Rider Black Sun reimagines a beloved 1987 series as a gritty, mature political drama. By exploring themes of discrimination and societal collapse through the lens of human-Kaijin coexistence, director Kazuya Shiraishi shifts the focus from traditional heroics to the complex, tragic history of two former allies turned bitter rivals.

Released on Amazon Prime Video in October 2022, Kamen Rider Black Sun serves as both a 50th-anniversary celebration for the broader franchise and a 35th-anniversary tribute to the original Kamen Rider Black. Unlike its predecessor, this iteration carries a 16+/18+ rating, signaling a deliberate pivot toward adult viewers. The narrative is set in a 2022 Japan grappling with the fallout of a government experiment from fifty years prior, which created Kaijins—altered beings now forced to coexist with humanity under a fragile and failing social order.

The story centers on the fractured relationship between Kotaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki. Once colleagues within the Gorgom organization, the two men find themselves on opposing sides of a brewing conflict. Their ideological divide is further complicated by Aoi Izumi, a young activist fighting against the systemic prejudice faced by Kaijins. As they navigate this volatile landscape, the series examines the legacy of the dying Creation King and the political machinations that threaten to destroy their society's status quo.

Production began in 2019, with director Kazuya Shiraishi aiming to capture the inherent sadness of the source material. To ensure the visual style matched the ambitious tone, Shiraishi enlisted veteran tokusatsu director Shinji Higuchi, who brought in Kiyotaka Taguchi to oversee special effects. While the project was designed for mature audiences, Shiraishi maintained a hope that younger viewers might still find value in the story. The production, which wrapped principal photography in March 2022, utilized a mix of practical effects and modern storytelling to ground its high-concept premise in a realistic, albeit dark, socio-political crisis.
