In short: In the 2002 series Kamen Rider Ryuki, thirteen Card Decks force heroes into a deadly conflict. To win, Riders must feed their monsters the life force of others. It is a high-stakes game where the ultimate prize is a wish, but the cost is everything.

From February 3, 2002, until January 19, 2003, TV Asahi broadcast Kamen Rider Ryuki, which brought a fresh motif of cards, animals, and knights to the series. The series centers on the 'Rider Fight,' a battle royale where thirteen Card Decks form contracts with monsters from the Mirror World—a parallel dimension opposite our own. To draw strength from these monsters, Riders must feed them the life force of creatures they destroy. This unique premise was a joint collaboration between Toei and Ishimori Productions. The show aired alongside the series Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger.

The rules of the game are absolute: there can be only one Kamen Rider. The creator of the Advent Cards dictates that all other participants must be killed to ensure a single victor, who is then granted one wish. This concept fuels the main struggle for characters such as Shinji Kido, an ORE Journal online news intern, who joins the battle to prevent mindless violence and safeguard others rather than for profit.

While the series originally intended to feature 50 Riders, the concept was scaled down to thirteen. In the actual television series, only ten of these Riders appeared. The remaining three were introduced through other media: two appeared in a movie and one appeared in a special. This complex narrative structure has led to various alternate tellings, including the 'Kamen Rider Ryuki Special: 13 Riders' and the 'Episode Final' film, which explores different outcomes for the survivors. The franchise's musical production transitioned from Columbia Music Entertainment to the Avex Group during this era. This specific storyline was written by Toshiki Inoue.
