The art of the heal is about more than just clicking

TF2 Medic: Basic Strategy · 4:12 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: In most shooters, success means aiming at your enemies. As a Medic in Team Fortress 2, you must do the opposite. Mastering this role requires shifting from a combat mindset to one of high-stakes triage, where your primary weapon is your ability to sustain others.

The Medic is defined by his role as a dedicated healer and support class. With only 150 hit points and slow health regeneration, he is physically vulnerable compared to frontline combatants. His primary tools are the Syringe gun for self-defense and the Medigun, which serves as the core of his gameplay. Unlike standard shooters where players focus on center-screen targets, a Medic must maintain a constant beam on allies, even pushing their health beyond their natural maximum limits.

A central mechanic is the ubercharge meter, which fills as you heal teammates. At 100%, players can trigger a period of total invulnerability for themselves and their target. However, strategy dictates that a living Medic with zero percent charge is more valuable than a dead one with a full meter. Players must choose between different Mediguns based on the situation: the default provides safety against sentries, while the Kritzkrieg offers 100% critical hits—a high-risk, high-reward option for clearing large groups of enemies.

Effective play requires overcoming 'derp mode,' a common beginner mistake where a Medic latches onto a single Heavy and ignores the rest of the team. Success depends on constant triage: identifying who needs help most based on current fire or tactical importance. Communication is the final layer; whether through voice commands like "Go! Go! Go!" or manual warnings, a Medic must coordinate with their team to ensure that when they provide protection, it is used effectively.
