In short: To solve the problem of overcrowding on France's busiest rail lines, engineers had to rethink the geometry of speed. They took a design traditionally reserved for slow commuter trains and forced it into the high-speed world, overcoming extreme aerodynamic drag and center-of-gravity risks.

The TGV Duplex was born from a logistical bottleneck on the LGV Sud-Est line. By the 1980s, the line reached capacity, but engineers couldn't simply add more trains due to complex signaling and braking limits, nor could they widen the trains due to strict loading gauge restrictions. The solution was vertical: a bi-level configuration that increased passenger capacity by 45% without increasing the train's footprint. This transition was not without risk. To assess how the public felt about 'commuter-style' seating, Alstom constructed a life-sized model in 1988, alongside additional trials exploring how a train with a much elevated centre of gravity would move. To keep the train within the 17-tonne axle load limit, Alstom utilized extruded aluminum to minimize weight. These designs also required specialized engineering, such as the Faiveley CX pantograph with pneumatic active control to maintain overhead line contact and disc brakes on powered axles to reduce noise and wear. The technology has since evolved into three generations. The first generation (1995) established the workhorse fleet, while the second-generation 'Dasye' introduced asynchronous motors—allowing individual motors to be isolated during failures—and the European Rail Traffic Management System. Today, these trains remain central to French rail, with some being reconfigured for high-density low-cost services that can carry up to 644 passengers by removing first-class accommodations and using slimline seating.
