A heavyweight visitor from another star system has entered our neighborhood
In short: On July 1, 2025, the ATLAS survey in Hawaii detected a fast-moving object with a hyperbolic path, confirming it originated from outside our solar system. This discovery marks only the third time humanity has observed such an interstellar traveler.
Unlike previous interstellar objects like 'Oumuamua or Borisov, 3I/ATLAS is significantly larger, with early estimates suggesting it could stretch dozens of kilometers across. It is currently traveling at a velocity exceeding 26 kilometers per second, which equates to over 94,000 kilometers per hour.
The object's speed is remarkable; it is moving fast enough to travel from Earth to the Moon in less than five hours. Because its trajectory is hyperbolic, scientists know it is a one-time visitor that will never return to our solar system.
