A cosmic interloper is rewriting our map of the galaxy
In short: For the first time in history, we are watching a third interstellar visitor enter our neighborhood. This object, 3I/ATLAS, is moving so fast and on such a strange path that it proves our solar system is not an isolated island, but a busy cosmic crossroads.
Discovered on July 1, 2025, 3I/ATLAS (also designated C/2025 N1) was first spotted by the ATLAS project's Deep Random Survey telescope in Chile. While it was initially given the temporary name A11pl3Z, researchers quickly identified it as an interstellar object (ISO). Unlike asteroids or comets that orbit our sun, ISOs originate from outside our sun's sphere of influence. 3I/ATLAS is confirmed as such because it follows a highly hyperbolic orbit with an eccentricity of 6.2, meaning it is not gravitationally bound to our sun and is on a one-way trip through our neighborhood.
The object is currently barreling toward us at speeds exceeding 130,000 mph (210,000 km/h). The object should approach the sun at its nearest distance during late October prior to returning into the outer reaches of space. This discovery is particularly significant because 3I/ATLAS is described as the largest and brightest interstellar object detected to date. Because it is a
it provides a rare opportunity for scientists to study the chemical composition and physical properties of a potentially offering clues about how other star systems formed.
Before 3I/ATLAS, only two other ISOs were confirmed: 1I/'Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. 'Oumuamua was a strange, cigar-shaped rock that showed little cometary activity, while 2I/Borisov behaved much more like a traditional comet. Because 3I/ATLAS was caught as it was entering the system rather than leaving it, astronomers have several months to observe it. This data helps researchers understand whether our solar system's formation was typical or unique compared to the rest of the Milky Way.
