The fleeting window to visit the solar system's furthest frontier

A Once In A Lifetime Opportunity To Reach Sedna, The Former Planet X · 15:25 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Sedna is currently making its closest approach to the Sun in millennia. This video explores why this rare orbital alignment offers a unique, time-sensitive chance for humanity to study one of our most mysterious neighbors.

Sedna is a trans-Neptunian object located in the Kuiper Belt with an extremely elliptical orbit that takes approximately 11,390 years to complete. Approaching its nearest proximity to the Sun, the body will hit perihelion during 2076 prior to vanishing into outer space for many millennia.

The object is significant because it may be the first discovered body originating from the Oort Cloud. While NASA is evaluating a mission, the project faces hurdles like economic constraints and "old father syndrome," where scientists struggle to commit to missions that won't be completed during their own careers.
