New crews arrive at the International Space Station to expand human research

Agency Officials Hail Arrival of New Crew at the International Space Station · 16:58 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: From the Baikonur Cosmodrome to the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, international crews are continuously docking with the International Space Station. These missions bring together specialists from NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency to conduct vital research in microgravity.

The International Space Station serves as a revolving laboratory for global space agencies. Max Suraev (Soyuz Commander), Reid Wiseman (NASA Flight Engineer), and Alexander Gerst (ESA Flight Engineer) arrived via the Soyuz TMA-13M during the Expedition 40/41 mission in May 2014. This arrival was marked by a joint appearance in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, by officials from NASA, Roscosmos, and the European Space Agency. The docking was celebrated by agency leaders including William Gerstenmaier and Oleg Ostapenko. Jean-Jacques Dordain also attended the event alongside the officials.

More recent missions have utilized SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft to ferry crews to the outpost. Departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, the four-person Crew-13 mission included Pilot Luke Delaney, Commander Jessica Watkins, Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk. Watkins, a geologist who previously spent 170 days in space during the Crew-4 mission in 2022, is the first Black woman to serve on the station. The mission launched despite potential issues with gusty winds or thunderstorms. Delaney's high school even celebrated his departure by naming the day after him.

The station was to host the Crew-13 team for a duration of up to six months of work and residence. Their spacecraft, named Grace, was the fifth and final Dragon capsule built by SpaceX. In contrast, the Expedition 74 crew, consisting of Anna Kikina, Pyotr Dubrov, and Anil Menon, arrived on July 14, 2026, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This crew is currently in the second week of a planned eight-and-a-half-month mission, focusing on space research and adaptation to life in orbit. The trio is currently using their time to master living in orbit. They are also busy performing various types of space research.
