How the European Space Agency prepares its newest generation of reserve astronauts for space

The Astronaut Reserve Training (ART) takes place at the European Astronaut Centre near Cologne, Germany. Candidates, referred to as ARTists, undergo a comprehensive curriculum that covers the International Space Station program, European space institutions, and the broader space industry.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, the training emphasizes practical skills including spacecraft systems, robotics, and survival techniques. The program also incorporates scientific studies, scuba diving, and training in human behavior to ensure candidates are ready for the complexities of space exploration.
