SpaceX Dragon delivers vital cargo and scientific tools to the International Space Station
In short: From regenerating flatworms to wooden probes, SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft is more than just a delivery truck. Carrying tons of supplies, these missions support hundreds of experiments that explore everything from solar wind to the effects of microgravity on biological tissue and materials.
SpaceX has been conducting operational cargo missions for NASA since 2012. These resupply flights utilize the Falcon 9 rocket and the Dragon spacecraft to deliver essential hardware, crew supplies, and scientific tools to the International Space Station (ISS). For example, one mission involved launching approximately 2.4 tons of science investigations and cargo, intended to support more than 150 experiments during Expeditions 39 and 40. These launches typically depart from Cape Canaveral. Most missions utilize the Space Launch Complex 40 facility. The Dragon capsule often returns to Earth via a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. This process ensures that research materials are safely recovered.
The scientific potential of these deliveries is vast. Investigations include studying how gravity affects tissue regeneration in flatworms—which can replace cells as they age or are damaged—and fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). Researchers also use these missions to test how cosmic radiation and microgravity affect Antarctic moss, or to examine solar wind via the Coronal Diagnostic Experiment. Even the materials themselves are under scrutiny, such as testing the 'cold welding' of metals in microgravity.
Innovation extends to the spacecraft's own construction and environmental impact. Recent missions have carried LignoSat, a tiny wooden probe developed by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry. This experiment aims to determine if wood can be used for more environmentally friendly spacecraft manufacturing by measuring how temperature, strain, and atomic oxygen affect wooden structures in a vacuum. These commercial resupply efforts, managed through NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract, continue to expand the station's unique capabilities as a platform for Earth and space science.
