Answering the stars: An astronaut hosts a Q&A while his colleagues walk in space
In short: While Chris Cassidy and Luca Parmitano performed a six and a half hour spacewalk outside the International Space Station, Tom Marshburn hosted a live Q&A at the Newseum. He spoke to aspiring journalists and students, sharing insights from his own extensive experience conducting repairs and spacewalks in Earth orbit.
On Tuesday, July 16, the Newseum in Washington became a unique bridge between Earth and orbit. The event, moderated by Newseum Institute COO Gene Policinski, coincided with the assembly and maintenance work required to prepare for the new Russian Nauka module. The spacewalk itself was scheduled to begin at 8:10 a.m. The live feed of the orbital work was displayed on the museum's large atrium screen.
The audience included high school students attending the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference, many of whom were aspiring journalists. Marshburn, the most recent astronaut to complete a spacewalk and return to Earth, drew on his extensive experience to engage the students. His background includes more than 24 hours of spacewalking, notably a 5.5-hour mission in May to repair an ammonia leak outside the space station. The session was part of a broader media event organized by NASA. Reporters were encouraged to reach out to Jonathan Thompson by noon on Monday, July 15, to coordinate coverage.
Marshburn's career in orbit spans several significant milestones. His first spaceflight took place in July 2009 aboard the space shuttle Endeavour during a mission to assemble the space station. He later returned to the station as a flight engineer for Expeditions 34 and 35, serving from December through May. The event at the Newseum allowed these complex orbital mechanics to be discussed in person, even as the live broadcast of the spacewalk played on the museum's atrium screen. The Newseum is situated at 555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. For those unable to attend in person, NASA TV provided live streams of both the museum discussion and the EVA.
