In short: It looks like a curved weapon on radar, but this atmospheric phenomenon is a powerhouse of destruction. Known as a bow echo, these organized thunderstorm systems generate intense straight-line winds that can match the fury of tornadoes, leaving a path of widespread damage across hundreds of miles.

A bow echo is a specific radar signature formed by a mesoscale convective system, characterized by an arc shape resembling an archer's bow. These systems, which can range from 20 to 200 km in size, typically have a lifespan of 3 to 6 hours. The distinctive shape is caused by the focusing of strong airflow at the rear of the storm. The process is driven by a powerful elevated rear inflow jet at mid-levels; as this jet descends and spreads along the surface, it generates damaging straight-line winds.

The mechanics of the bow echo involve a complex interplay of pressure and wind. A mid-level mesolow is created by the combination of warm temperatures aloft and the strength of the surface cold pool and mesohigh. As the rear inflow jet bows the storm, vortices develop on either side of the jet. Over time, the Coriolis force intensifies the cyclonic vortex while weakening the anticyclonic one, eventually transforming the system into an asymmetric, comma-shaped echo. While these storms can produce tornadoes, they are more famous for their straight-line winds, which can reach or exceed 100 mph (160 km/h) in powerful versions known as derechos.

The historical and economic impact of these storms is significant. In 1674, a storm thought to be a bow echo devastated Utrecht in the Netherlands. More recently, the 2014 Pentecost weekend storms in Europe caused 6 fatalities and roughly 650 million euros in damages across the Rhine-Ruhr region. In October 2024, a series of bow echoes in São Paulo, Brazil, resulted in eight total fatalities and an estimated 1.65 billion BRL in damages, with wind gusts reaching 75 mph (120 km/h).
