In short: A month after launch, the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 has reached its final orbit and successfully completed its first science tests, marking a major milestone in studying Earth's atmosphere.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) is NASA's first spacecraft specifically designed to study atmospheric carbon dioxide. After reaching its final operating orbit, the mission has begun returning science data.

The spacecraft's health was confirmed through 'first light' test data collected on August 6, 2014, as it flew over central New Guinea. This successful testing validates the performance of the mission's science instruments.
