How astronauts train for space by descending into Italian caves
In short: This video documents the first day of the CAVES 2014 mission. Participants enter the Sa Grutta cave system in Sardinia to simulate the isolation and technical challenges of spaceflight through complex scientific experiments.
The CAVES program, run by the European Astronaut Centre, uses underground environments to test human performance. By navigating the Sa Grutta caves, both rookie and seasoned International Space Station astronauts practice essential skills like leadership, decision-making, and teamwork.
A varied team for the 2014 expedition consists of ESA's Luca Parmitano, NASA's Scott Tingle, Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Alexander Mirsurkin, plus ESA engineer Matthias Maurer.
