Why astronauts descend into Italian caves to prepare for deep space

CAVES 2014: Mission log, day 3 · 6:00 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the third day of the CAVES 2014 mission, where astronauts navigate the Sa Grutta cave system in Sardinia to practice the essential skills required for spaceflight.

The CAVES course, managed by the European Astronaut Centre, uses underground exploration to simulate the challenges of space. By navigating the branches of the Sa Grutta caves, participants—ranging from seasoned ISS astronauts to rookies—work to refine their leadership, decision-making, and collective problem-solving abilities.

Members of the 2014 team comprise ESA's Luca Parmitano, NASA's Scott Tingle, Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Alexander Mirsurkin from Roscosmos, plus ESA engineer Matthias Maurer. Beyond physical navigation, the mission focuses on conducting scientific experiments and documenting complex underground activities.
