How astronauts train for the isolation of deep space underground
In short: This video captures the final day of the CAVES 2014 mission in Sardinia. Watch as astronauts and engineers navigate the Sa Grutta caves to master the teamwork and decision-making required for life in space.
The CAVES program, run by the European Astronaut Centre, uses the underground Sa Grutta cave system in Italy to simulate the challenges of spaceflight. By working in total darkness and isolation, participants practice essential skills like leadership and problem-solving.
The 2014 crew included a mix of experienced and new explorers, such as ESA's Luca Parmitano and NASA's Scott Tingle, alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexander Mirsurkin and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, and engineer Matthias Maurer.
