Can space-certified textiles transform the future of everyday fashion?
In short: The European Space Agency is bridging the gap between orbital utility and high-end style. Through the ‘Couture in Orbit’ project, fashion students are using space-certified materials and high-tech innovations—like embedded sensors and super-absorbent fabrics—to design apparel that is both practical for astronauts and desirable for life on Earth.
Launched as a collaboration between the ESA and the Science Museum in London, the Couture in Orbit project tasked five leading European fashion schools with designing garments inspired by space exploration. From 2014 to 2016, five ESA astronauts representing the UK, France, Italy, Denmark, and Germany travelled to the International Space Station, acting as inspiration for these celestial creations.
Involved institutions were Denmark's Fashion Design Akademiet, the UK's Ravensbourne, Italy's Politecnico di Milano, and ESMOD in both France and Germany. Every academy worked around particular motifs, including innovation, health, nutrition, technology, or the environment. To move beyond mere aesthetics, students had to consider how their designs might function in daily life while incorporating advanced technologies like heating units or smart fabrics bristling with sensors.
The project was supported by technical sponsors like Bionic Yarn, a New York City-based start-up that produces fabric from recycled ocean plastic, and Sympatex. This initiative highlights the bidirectional influence between space and fashion industries. For instance, ESA innovations have already transitioned to Earthly use, appearing in Björn Borg thermal underwear and the Dainese Skinsuit, which is designed to alleviate back problems in astronauts.
The project culminated in May 2016 with a high-profile fashion show at the Science Museum's Lates event. The runway featured 30 shortlisted outfits, ranging from avant-garde pieces with morphing accessories to wearable tech, showcasing how the next generation of apparel might integrate extreme-environment utility with luxury and national culture.
