In short: NASA is preparing for a landmark mission where two crew members will reside on the International Space Station for twelve consecutive months. This extended stay aims to gather critical physiological data to help scientists understand how the human body adapts to prolonged spaceflight.

During a briefing at the Johnson Space Center in January 2015, the crew discussed their upcoming journey. Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko are set to begin this inaugural yearlong expedition, which is designed to inform future deep-space exploration efforts. While Gennady Padalka will join them for the initial launch via the Soyuz TMA-16M spacecraft in March 2015, he is scheduled to return to Earth after a standard duration in September.

Kelly and Kornienko will continue their mission until March 2016. By observing their health and performance over this extended timeframe, researchers hope to gain essential insights into the long-term effects of microgravity on human biology, providing a foundation for subsequent missions beyond low Earth orbit.
