The orbital logistics of burning out to light the way

Cygnus Completes Mission! · 5:42 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Space exploration relies on a delicate cycle of delivery and disposal. The Cygnus cargo craft recently completed its mission, demonstrating how commercial spacecraft serve as both vital lifelines for astronauts and necessary tools for orbital maneuvering before meeting their end in a fiery atmospheric reentry.

The Orbital Sciences' Cygnus craft serves as a critical component of NASA’s commercial resupply infrastructure. Following its arrival at the International Space Station (ISS) on September 29, it spent one month berthed to the Harmony module. During this time, it functioned as a primary delivery vehicle for food and supplies intended for the residents of the orbital complex. This specific flight served as a demonstration for subsequent full commercial delivery missions.

Beyond simple logistics, these spacecraft are engineered for high-precision orbital mechanics. The Cygnus XL variant demonstrated its ability to perform 'reboosts,' using a gimbaled delta velocity engine to adjust the ISS's altitude. In one instance, it fired its thrusters for 18 minutes to shift the station’s orbit by 1.5 miles at apogee and 0.8 miles at perigee. These maneuvers are essential for maintaining the station's specific orbital parameters, which were adjusted to a path of 265.5 x 256.8 miles.

The lifecycle of a Cygnus mission concludes with a planned 'destructive entry.' After being filled with disposal cargo and unberthed on October 22, the craft was commanded to de-orbit. By intentionally burning up in Earth's atmosphere on October 23, the spacecraft clears space debris while simultaneously preparing the orbital phasing for future missions, such as SpaceX Crew-13. This cycle of delivery, maneuvering, and disposal ensures that the ISS remains a sustainable laboratory for international crews.
