The Cygnus spacecraft marks a new era in cargo logistics

Recapping the Flight of Cygnus · 30:06 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch the technical transition of America's newest space-faring resupply ship as it moves from demonstration to regular operations. This video captures the critical maneuvers required to ferry thousands of pounds of supplies to the International Space Station.

The Cygnus spacecraft, developed by Orbital Sciences Corporation (now Northrop Grumman), serves as a vital link for transporting science investigations, hardware, and supplies to the International Space Station. The demonstration mission involved an 11-day journey where the craft was grappled and berthed by astronauts onboard the station.

The mission highlights the transition to the larger, more cargo-capable Cygnus XL. This solar-powered spacecraft is designed for regular cargo runs, capable of delivering over 11,000 pounds of materials. After completing its mission, the craft is commanded to deorbit, where it is designed to burn up in the atmosphere while disposing of several thousand pounds of trash. From Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried the Cygnus XL into orbit during September 2025. During its departure, ground controllers use the Canadarm2 robotic arm to detach the craft from the Unity module, while astronauts monitor the systems to ensure a safe release.
