In short: After delivering more than 11,000 pounds of science investigations, hardware, and essential supplies to the orbiting laboratory, Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL is scheduled to undock this week. This flight represents the debut for the expanded, higher-capacity solar-powered craft, aiding NASA's Commercial Resupply Services.

Serving as Northrop Grumman’s 23rd Commercial Resupply Services mission, the Cygnus XL spacecraft represents a major breakthrough as the inaugural flight for this expanded, higher-capacity solar-powered craft. Riding a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, it departed from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, specifically Space Launch Complex 40, during September 2025. This specific mission marks the first time this larger, more capable version of the solar-powered vehicle has been flown.

The departure process involves ground controllers using the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to detach the craft from the Unity module’s Earth-facing port. Once maneuvered into position for release, the spacecraft will be monitored by ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot. Following its release, the craft is scheduled to deorbit on Saturday, March 14. The undocking procedure is set to begin at 6:45 a.m. EDT.

This deorbiting process serves a practical purpose: the spacecraft will carry several thousand pounds of trash back toward Earth. During its reentry into the atmosphere, the cargo and the craft itself will harmlessly burn up. This mission follows earlier efforts by Orbital Sciences Corporation, which completed at least eight NASA-contracted supply missions through 2016, including a release on February 18 that delivered more than a ton of supplies and experiments. The craft is designed to dispose of several thousand pounds of waste during its descent. This reentry into the atmosphere ensures the materials burn up harmlessly.
