Why the Space Shuttle Discovery returned to the assembly building
In short: After a critical tanking test, the shuttle Discovery was moved back to the Vehicle Assembly Building. This video explains the meticulous inspection and repair process required to ensure the vehicle is flight-ready for its next mission.
Following a tanking test on December 17, crews began the process of removing 89 sensors from the external fuel tank's aluminum skin. This move necessitated a return to the Vehicle Assembly Building to reapply foam insulation and scan for cracks or structural issues.
To assess if Discovery is prepared for the STS-133 International Space Station flight on February 3, technical staff are analysing results from these trials.
