Can an astronaut drive multiple rovers from orbit?
In short: Watch ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen test the limits of remote robotics. This experiment explores how humans can command lunar-bound rovers from the International Space Station to perform complex repairs on Earth.
As part of the Meteron project, Mogensen commanded a car-sized rover named Eurobot to repair a mockup lunar base in the Netherlands. The mission tested a new user interface designed for space-based operations, allowing him to manage the vehicle while a ground center in Germany controlled a second rover.
The experiment was highly successful, finishing in one continuous session—well ahead of the planned three sessions over two days. This research is part of Mogensen's ten-day 'iriss' mission, which aims to refine technologies for future deep-space exploration.
