How a space-based 'data highway' solved the satellite downlink bottleneck
In short: Low Earth orbit satellites are vital for disaster response, yet they often spend most of their time unable to talk to Earth. By using laser communication to bridge the gap between orbits, the European Data Relay System is transforming how we access critical information from space.
Traditionally, satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) face a significant connectivity gap. While they complete a full circuit of Earth roughly every 100 minutes, they typically only have about 10 minutes per orbit to downlink data to a ground station. This forces satellites to store information until they have a clear line of sight, creating delays that can stretch from hours to minutes.
The European Data Relay System (EDRS), nicknamed the 'Space Data Highway,' solves this by acting as an orbital relay. It uses geostationary (GEO) satellites—specifically EDRS-A and EDRS-C—to bridge the distance. These GEO nodes maintain a continuous line of sight to ground stations and use Laser Communication Terminals (LCTs) to connect with LEO satellites as they pass by. This can quadruple the contact time between an Earth observer and its ground segment.
The technology relies on extreme precision. To establish a link, laser terminals must locate and lock onto a target just 135 mm in diameter from 45,000 km away, even while one satellite travels at 8 km/s relative to Earth. This process takes approximately 55 seconds. Utilising optical links rather than standard radio-frequency bands, the system bypasses spectrum congestion to allow transfer rates reaching 1.8 gigabits per second (Gbps).
This infrastructure, developed through public-private cooperation involving the ESA, Airbus Defence and Space, and others, provides a fast, secure, and autonomous way to deliver data for Earth observation, security, and scientific missions.
