The 21-minute excursion that paved the way to the moon
In short: Before humans could walk on the lunar surface, one man had to learn how to move in the vacuum of space. In 1965, Ed White stepped outside a capsule for a brief, historic journey that proved humanity could navigate the cosmos beyond the hull of a ship.
On 3 June 1965, Ed White became the first American to conduct an extravehicular activity (EVA). As the pilot of Gemini 4, White spent 21 minutes outside the spacecraft, pioneering self-propelled movement in a vacuum using a maneuvering unit. This technical milestone provided a model for repairing satellites, building the International Space Station, and capturing orbital objects.
Born in 1930 in San Antonio, Texas, White followed a lineage of aviation. The son of a West Point graduate, he began piloting planes at age 12. He attended West Point, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1952, where he flew F-86 Sabre and F-100 Super Sabre jets in Germany. Following the 1957 launch of Sputnik I, he earned a master's degree in aeronautical engineering in 1959 and pursued test pilot credentials to join NASA. His early work included training astronauts like John Glenn and the chimpanzee Ham for zero-gravity environments.
White served as the senior pilot of the first Apollo mission. Tragically, a 1967 training fire within the Apollo command module killed White and two others, the first American casualties of the era. In 2015, NASA posthumously awarded him the Ambassador of Exploration Award at West Point.
