Searching for signs of ancient life on the Martian surface
In short: The European Space Agency's ExoMars programme aims to investigate the Martian environment to determine if life ever existed there, paving the way for future sample return missions.
The ExoMars programme is designed to address one of the most significant scientific questions of our time: whether life ever existed on Mars. To achieve this, the programme involves two distinct missions conducted in cooperation with Roscosmos. The first phase includes an Orbiter and an Entry, Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module, which is currently at Baikonur awaiting launch on a Russian Proton rocket. The second phase will feature a rover to further explore the planet.
These technological demonstrations are essential steps toward a larger objective: a future Mars sample return mission planned for the 2020s.
