Hunting for life's chemical fingerprints on the Martian surface
In short: The ExoMars mission is currently navigating a 500 million km journey to Mars. This joint European and Russian effort aims to decode the planet's geological secrets and search for signs of past or present microbial life.
The spacecraft carries four scientific packages, including an Atmospheric Chemistry Suite designed to investigate methane on Mars. While this gas might be produced by geological processes, it is also a potential indicator of biological activity from microbes.
The mission serves as a dual-purpose endeavor: performing core science while simultaneously testing critical lander and descent technologies for future exploration. Key milestones include the first high-resolution test images from the Trace Gas Orbiter and a major course correction scheduled for July to ensure an arrival on October 19, 2016.
