The inflatable prototype testing the future of deep space habitats

Expanding Technology Aboard the ISS · 4:04 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch how NASA's Expedition 47 crew expanded the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module to its full volume, testing a new way to build structures for long-duration space travel.

The Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) represents a shift toward inflatable architecture for future deep space exploration. Following its launch on an April 8 SpaceX/Dragon cargo craft, the module was attached to the Tranquility module's aft port on April 16. On May 28, the crew introduced air to expand the structure to its full dimensions of 11.6 by 10.5 feet.

As the first expandable component attached to the ISS, BEAM will serve as a prototype for future habitats. For a two-year period, the unit will stay connected to the station, allowing astronauts to conduct regular internal inspections of its hardware.
