The Final Countdown: Preparing for Life on the Orbital Outpost
In short: Watch the final transition from Earth to orbit as the Expedition 33/34 crew prepares for their journey. This footage captures the rigorous pre-launch sequence and the solemn departure from Kazakhstan.
At Star City's Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, three astronauts—Oleg Novitskiy (Soyuz Commander), Kevin Ford (NASA Flight Engineer), and Evgeny Tarelkin (Russian Flight Engineer)—finished customary rites on 9 October 2012. This marked the beginning of their final transit to the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
The crew spent two weeks in Kazakhstan conducting intensive pre-launch activities before their October 23 liftoff. Their mission aboard the Soyuz TMA-06M spacecraft was scheduled to last five months, during which they would inhabit and maintain the International Space Station.
