In short: Space missions are more than just launches; they are intricate cycles of arrival, scientific discovery, and departure. During Expedition 39, a diverse international crew managed everything from space agriculture to complex spacewalks, before finally undocking their Soyuz spacecraft to begin the long journey back to Earth.

The Expedition 3/40 transition period in 2014 was marked by a high volume of orbital activity. The mission involved a rotating crew of international specialists, including NASA Flight Engineer Rick Mastracchio, JAXA's Koichi Wakata, and Roscosmos cosmonauts such as Alexander Skvortsov, Oleg Artemyev, and Mikhail Tyurin. These individuals were responsible for a wide array of microgravity research, ranging from the study of improved drug treatments to observing the behavior of gases and liquids in weightlessness.

Beyond pure science, the mission focused on the practicalities of long-duration space habitation. The crew installed hardware for space agriculture and conducted significant extravehicular activities. On April 23, 2014, Richard Mastracchio and Steve Swanson performed a spacewalk lasting 1 hour and 36 minutes. The station also served as a hub for logistical operations, managing the arrival of cargo from SpaceX CRS-3 and the docking of Progress supply vehicles like Progress 53 and Progress 55.

The logistics of the mission began on the ground at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. In the days leading up to the March 26, 2014, launch, the Soyuz TMA-12M spacecraft underwent rigorous preparation, including assembly on March 22 and rollout to the launch pad by train on March 23. The mission's conclusion was equally significant, as the Soyuz spacecraft undocked from the orbiting laboratory, signaling the end of the crew's stay and the start of their descent to Earth.
