A historic arrival: Elena Serova becomes the first Russian woman to live aboard the ISS
In short: In September 2014, a Soyuz spacecraft carried three crew members toward the International Space Station. Elena Serova achieved a milestone by becoming the initial Russian woman to reside and perform duties on the station. Their six-hour journey marked the beginning of a mission focused on everything from immune cells to atmospheric pollution.
The transition between Expedition 41 and 42 began on September 26, 2014, when the Soyuz TMA-14M launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The crew included Soyuz Commander Alexander Samokutyaev and Flight Engineer Elena Serova of Roscosmos, alongside NASA's Barry Wilmore. Following a six-hour rendezvous, the craft docked with the Poisk module on the Russian segment of the station. The spacecraft departed from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Kazakh time. This specific launch initiated the journey for the three astronauts.
The incoming team met the resident crew upon landing: Roscosmos Commander Max Suraev, alongside NASA's Reid Wiseman and ESA's Alexander Gerst, both serving as Flight Engineers. This arrival was a significant milestone for international cooperation and gender representation, as Serova became the first Russian woman to reside and conduct research on the station. The station's resident crew members included Reid Wiseman and Alexander Gerst. These individuals were already stationed on the complex when the new crew arrived.
The subsequent Expedition 42 mission expanded the scope of orbital research. The crew conducted diverse scientific studies, including investigating how space environments affect immune cells and observing pollution within Earth's atmosphere. They also investigated super-heated materials to aid in the development of advanced alloys. Beyond human biology and Earth observation, the mission involved complex logistics, including cargo deliveries from SpaceX and various spacewalks performed by crew members like Barry Wilmore and Terry Virts. The crew also managed various logistics involving SpaceX cargo missions. Additionally, several spacewalks were conducted to support the mission's objectives.
