Space exploration begins with a walk through history
In short: Before heading into the void of orbit, the next generation of astronauts traveled to the heart of Moscow. Their pre-launch journey combined high-tech preparation with traditional Russian ceremonies, honoring the icons of space exploration before departing for a six-month stay on the International Space Station.
The Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, situated within Russia's Star City, hosted members of Expedition 41/42 on 5 September. This site serves as a pivotal hub for preparation where Commander Alexander Samokutyaev (Roscosmos), NASA Flight Engineer Barry Wilmore, and Roscosmos Flight Engineer Elena Serova met with the press. The group included backups Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko, who were slated for a separate one-year mission beginning in March 2015. The group also included backups Gennady Padalka of Roscosmos. These individuals prepared for their specific flight roles in Russia.
The transition from Earth to orbit was marked by a symbolic pilgrimage to Red Square and the Kremlin. The crew laid flowers at the Kremlin Wall, a site where Russian space icons are interred. This ritual underscores the cultural weight of human spaceflight, bridging the gap between modern engineering and the historical legacy of those who first reached the stars. Because she would be just the fourth Russian woman to enter space, Elena Serova’s next journey gained significant attention. This ceremony occurred just before the scheduled launch date. It served as a public appearance for the international team.
Once aboard the Soyuz TMA-14M spacecraft on September 26, the crew transitioned from ceremony to rigorous science. Expedition 41 was tasked with investigating how weightlessness affects human biology—specifically muscle and bone changes—while also exploring plant growth in microgravity and analyzing the composition of meteors. The mission profile included complex extravehicular activities, including three distinct spacewalks totaling over 15 hours of cumulative time outside the station between October 7 and October 22, 2014. The crew also managed various cargo and progress vehicle arrivals during their stay. They captured numerous images of daily life and orbiting station views.
