The physical toll of traveling 71 million miles in six months

In short: Returning to Earth after half a year in orbit is more than just a flight home; it is a biological recalibration. After spending over five months in microgravity, the human body must suddenly contend with the heavy reality of physics and radiation exposure.

On March 11, Expedition 42 Commander Barry Wilmore and Russian cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyaev and Elena Serova successfully landed their Soyuz TMA-14M spacecraft in Kazakhstan. Their journey concluded a 167-day stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS), which began on November 23, 2014. During this period, the crew traveled nearly 71 million miles, conducting extensive research and technology demonstrations while living in an environment that defies standard terrestrial physics.

The transition back to Earth is a complex logistical and physiological feat. Upon landing at approximately 10:07 p.m. EDT, the trio was met by Russian recovery teams in freezing temperatures with snow and fog. These teams assisted the crew in exiting the vehicle and beginning the process of adjusting to gravity—a primary concern for those who have spent months in weightlessness. While Serova completed her first flight, Wilmore and Samokutyaev are veterans, having logged hundreds of days in space across multiple previous missions.

Beyond the physical strain of re-entry, the mission served a critical scientific purpose regarding human survival in deep space. The crew carried 17 area dosimeters as part of the Area PADLES study, which monitored radiation levels throughout the Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo). This data is vital for designing future radiation monitoring equipment to protect astronauts on long-duration missions and workers in high-radiation industrial or medical environments. As they depart, they leave the station to Expedition 43, where the next crew will begin a year-long study on biomedical data to inform the future of human spaceflight.
