The 5.5-month journey to study the human body in orbit

Expedition 41/42 Launches to the International Space Station · 15:04 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch how the Expedition 41/42 crew launched from Kazakhstan to begin a long-duration mission to the International Space Station, where they tackled the physical toll of weightlessness on the human body.

Launched on September 26, 2014, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the Soyuz TMA-14M spacecraft carried a trio of astronauts and cosmonauts to the International Space Station for a 5 1/2 month mission. Elena Serova joined the team, marking a milestone as just the fourth Russian woman to reach orbit.

The mission served as a laboratory for microgravity science, specifically investigating how space travel causes changes to human muscle and bone. The crew also explored plant growth in weightlessness and analyzed the composition of meteors, while documenting their daily lives and experiments through extensive imagery.
