The rigorous final countdown for a journey into orbit
In short: Before astronauts board a Soyuz spacecraft, they must survive a grueling gauntlet of exams and strict isolation to ensure the safety of the International Space Station.
In the weeks leading up to launch, crew members Luca, Fyodor Yurchikhin, and Karen Nyberg underwent final examinations in Moscow. They were officially declared qualified by the Soyuz examination board on 10 May. This preparation is critical for their upcoming mission to dock with the orbital outpost on 29 May.
The transition from training to launch involves a strict quarantine at the Baikonur launch facility's Cosmonaut Hotel. Only family and flight surgeons are permitted during this period to prevent the introduction of bacteria or viruses into the station. Luca’s specific mission, supported by Italy's ASI, includes two scheduled spacewalks for equipment installation and experiment retrieval.
