The logistics of life outside the International Space Station
In short: Watch how astronauts Steve Bowen and Al Drew executed the first extravehicular activity of STS-133. This video captures the technical precision required to maintain the station's infrastructure in the vacuum of space.
The astronauts completed the EVA on Flight Day 5, installing equipment at various locations on the International Space Station. To create a backup power supply, a power extension cable was linked across the Tranquility and Unity nodes. Steve Bowen joined the mission as a replacement for Tim Kopra, who was sidelined by a bicycle accident.
Bowen made history as the first U.S. astronaut to fly on consecutive missions, having previously served on STS-132 in May 2010.
