Simulating the Void: How Astronauts Prepare for Orbital Spacewalks
In short: Watch how astronauts prepare for the high-stakes environment of a spacewalk. This video captures Commander Ken Ham and his crew as they rehearse complex maneuvers to deliver vital hardware to the International Space Station.
The footage features training for one of three planned extravehicular activities during a mission to the ISS. Crew members, including Mike Massimino, reflect on their previous experience training in Russia while preparing to transport 'Rassvet', a Russian-made Mini Research Module.
The simulation ensures that the team—which includes Commander Ken Ham and several mission specialists—can safely execute the delivery of the module using the Space Shuttle Atlantis.
