In short: Long before it became a global animated hit, Fishtronaut began as a simple computer game. Today, it serves as a sophisticated educational tool, teaching young children about environmental stewardship through the adventures of a goldfish in a high-tech suit who solves mysteries alongside a human girl and a monkey.

Created by Célia Catunda and Kiko Mistrorigo, Fishtronaut (known as Peixonauta in Portuguese) debuted on Discovery Kids in Latin America on April 20, 2009. While it eventually became a staple of international children's media, its origins date back to a computer game released in 2000. The transition to television was finalized in 2006, though the premiere was delayed until 2009 to accommodate necessary animation retakes.

The series centers on an anthropomorphic big goldfish who wears a specialized Bubblex suit. This technology allows him to fly out of water, breathe, and utilize various tools to solve mysteries in Smiling Trees Park. Alongside a human girl named Marina and a monkey named Zeek, the fish acts as a secret agent. The narrative structure often involves a 'Primary Objective Pod' (P.O.P.), a magical multicolored ball that releases clues only after viewers participate in a dance.

The franchise has expanded significantly beyond the screen. It moved to the stage with a play in Rio de Janeiro in 2011 and produced a feature film in 2012 to commemorate the series' third anniversary. A second original film followed in 2018. The brand is currently undergoing a revival planned for 2026, which will shift the medium from traditional animation to computer animation. Beyond entertainment, the show is recognized for its specific educational goal: teaching children to care for the environment.

The series has achieved diverse international reach, appearing in various languages including Spanish, French, Czech, and Turkish. It has been broadcast on networks like Qubo in the United States and Yoopa in Canada. Its success is underscored by a four out of five rating from Common Sense Media, highlighting its balance of adventure and educational value.
